In apparatus for raising liquids by vacuum according to the parent Specification the non- return valve is replaced by a three-branch cock 13 in the pipe 10 at the level attained by the liquid in the chamber 4 when a lower float actuated valve 6a closes the outlet to the pipe 9 leading from the chamber 4 to the cock 13, the third branch of which is connected to pipe 8 leading to the top of the chamber 4.
