Abstract

1,115,589. Solenoid plungers. DETROIT COIL CO. 8 Dec., 1966 [9 Dec., 1965], No. 55102/66. Heading H1P. A plunger for a solenoid assembly comprises a shank and a head having at least one arm extending transversely, and has a shading coil secured to the face of the arm which in use faces the solenoid. The positioning of the shading coil in the plunger instead of in the stator coil is said to reduce damage to the coil produced by the pounding of the plunger against the stator, and increases the efficiency of the assembly since the shading coil is not in the flux path when the plunger is extended. As shown, Fig. 1, a laminated C-shaped core 10 surrounds a solenoid coil 36 into which slides a laminated T-shaped plunger 28. A rectangular groove is provided in each of the two faces of the head of the plunger which abut arms 22 and 24 of the C-stack 10 and a closed copper shading coil is brazed or silver soldered into each of these grooves. The lower end of the shank 27 of armature 28 may be provided with an inset anvil (32), Fig. 2, which engages a push-pin extending through an aperture 16 provided in the C-stack laminations to return the plunger to its extended position when the coil is unenergized. The shading coils and the anvil may be brazed to the plunger laminations in a single operation.
