Abstract

1,115,581. Moulding sponge rubber sheets; laminates. UNIROYAL Ltd. 23 Sept., 1966 [2 Sept., 1965], No. 37600/65. Headings B5A and B5N. Sponge rubber sheeting is made by calendering a rubber-blowing agent mixture into a sheet, punching holes in the sheet, and finally vulcanizing and foaming the sheet. The holes are of such a size as to remain open during the foaming, and the punched-out pieces are reintroduced into the calender, thus eliminating wastage. A backing layer such as hessian or felt may be applied to the foamed sheet. In the described embodiment, a sheet is calendered between rollers and then perforated by passage under a " Turret " punch having a series of frusto-conical punches 8 spaced in sets about an open-ended vertically reciprocable cylinder 7. The punched-out pieces are blown from inside the cylinder on to a conveyer whence they pass to a feed mill and are reintroduced into the calender. The perforated sheet is covered by a heavy fabric and passed between heated vulcanizing and foaming plates after which the fabric is removed and the blown sheet bonded to a hessian covering. If the punches become clogged and require attention the cylinder 7 is merely rotated to bring a new set of punches into the operative position.
