Abstract

1,184,526. Laminated trim panel; press knives. FORD MOTOR CO. Ltd. 27 July, 1969, No. 35971/68. Headings B4B and B5N. A method of making a trim panel having padded portions separated by an embossed pattern comprises: (a) forming a layered structure having a backing layer 5, e.g. of hardboard, an intermediate cushion layer 6, e.g. of foamed polyvinyl chloride and an overlying cover sheet 7, e.g. of polyvinyl chloride, the cushion layer being formed of separate pieces of resilient material corresponding to the desired embossed pattern; (b) positioning the structure in a press having an embossing die arranged to form the desired embossed pattern; and (c) bringing the die into pressure contact with the cover sheet to effect bonding of the cover sheet to the backing layer through the gaps between the pads. Bonding may be effected by a heatsensitive adhesive layer 8; alternatively the cover sheet 7 may be of heat-softenable plastics material. Fig. 7 shows a die suitable for cutting a sheet of the resilient material into pads, the die having a plurality of steel strip knives mounted in pairs in base 10, a series of holes 11 joined by channel 13 permitting the application of a vacuum or pressure to the area confined by each pair of knives in order to retain or eject the scrap material.
