Abstract

1342600 Laminates IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 19 April 1971 [19 March 1970] 13355/70 Heading B5N A laminate is prepared by covering a panel, which may be of wood, hardboard, fibreboard, fibreglass or plastics, with a decorative thermoplastic sheet material at least 0À06 inch thick and having at least one layer which is cellular so that marginal portions of the sheet overlie the edges of the panel, reducing the thickness of at least some of the marginal portions of the sheet and attaching the marginal portions to the reverse side of the panel, usually by stapling or adhesive. The panel may be non-planar, in which case it is covered by a vacuum thermo-forming technique using an adhesive on the sheet or front face of the panel. The sheet may comprise polymers or copolymers of vinyl chloride, vinyl acetate or vinylidene chloride, polymers or interpolymers of acrylonitrile, butadiene or styrene, mixtures thereof, or polyurethanes. The thickness of the marginal portions is reduced by skiving, solvent treatment, an ultra-sonic technique or by heat and pressure to cause partial collapse of the cellular layer. The outer face of the sheet may be embossed or may be patterned by collapsing the cellular layer over selected areas by means of a radio frequency heating technique The cellular layer may be sandwiched between two solid layers, the second of which may be of the same plastics material as the cellular layer.
