Abstract

Polyolefin compositions comprise up to 6 weight per cent of one or more antistatic agents selected from metal and nitrogenous base sulphonates in which the organic radical is a C4- 30 alkyl or alkenyl group, an alkaryl or alkenyl aryl group having 2 to 30 chain carbon atoms or a polynuclear aromatic group having one or two C1- 9 alkyl or alkylene groups. Specified polyolefins are polymers and copolymers of ethylene, propylene and butylene. The compositions may also comprise non-ionic antistatic agents of formula R1O(CH2CH2O)n where R1 is alkyl, alkenyl, acyl, aryl or aralkyl having up to 20 carbon atoms or hydrogen and n is 2 to 100; or of formulae NR2R3R4 or R5R6N-X-NR7R8 where R2 is alkyl, alkenyl or acyl having 6 to 30 carbon atoms, R3 to R8 denote -(CxH2xO)nH where x is 2 or 3, n i 1 to 30, R4,R6 and R8 may alternatively be hydrogen, and X is C2- 6 alkylene. The compositions may be formed into shaped articles by extrusion, injection-moulding, press-moulding, rotational moulding and sintering. Many sulphate, sulphonate and non-ionic antistatic agents are listed, and examples describe compositions comprising alkyl sulphonates having an average of 15 carbon atoms with polyethylene, or copolymers of ethylene with propylene or butylene; and comprising the same sulphonate together with (4) polypropylene, lauryl heptaethylene glycol and nonylphenylheptaethylene glycol, (5) polypropylene and lauric diethanolamide, heptadecyl diethanolamine or N,N,N1,N1-tetrahydroxyethyl ethylenediamine, (6) polyethylene, lauryl heptaethylene glycol and nonylphenylheptaethylene glycol, and (7) polyethylene and dodecyl diethanolamine.
