Abstract

A synthetic crystalline zeolite having the composition, expressed in terms of oxides, <FORM:1115352/C1/1> wherein M represents at least one cation having a valence n of not more than 4, x is from 0 to 0.5 and y is less than 9; and containing less than 6% by weight of alkali metal, calculated as the alkali metal oxide is prepared by treatment of a zeolite A2O: Al2O3: 2-3SiO2: yH2O where A represents an alkali metal and y is less than 9.9 by (a) treatment with a solution of a nitrogen base for a time sufficient to remove a proportion of the alkali metal; and (b) calcining the so-treated zeolite at a temperature of 650 DEG to 925 DEG C. and if necessary the repeating steps (a) and (b) in sequence, the alkali-removal treatment and the calcining being such that the product contains less than 6% by weight of alkali metal reckoned as alkali metal oxide, and, in so far as M is not H, introducing the desired cation into the product of the preceding steps. The nitrogen base may be an ammonium salt or an amine salt e.g. ammonium chloride, nitrate and sulphate, tetraethyl ammonium chloride and tetramethyl ammonium sulphate and may be present in amount to exchange 10% to 20% of the cation. The temperature of the exchange may be 25-150 DEG C. and it may take 5 minutes to 24 hours. The cation M may be ammonium, H(+), a complex amine cation, a yttrium or rare earth ion or a cation of a metal of Group IB, IIA, IIB, IIIA, IIIB, IVB, VB, VIB, VIIB or VIII of the Periodic Table. Two or more cations may be present.
