Abstract

A zeolite of formula xM2/nO.Al2O3.3.5-7 SiO2.0-9 H2O where M is H+ or any cation other than alkali metal of valency n not greater than 4, and x is 0 to 1, having an R2O content (R is alkali metal) of less than 1% and a unit cell size of 24.2-24.45 <\>rA, is prepared by base exchange of a crystalline faujasite with a salt of a nitrogen base, either (a) until the Na2O is 1.5-4%, then washing, calcining at 700-870 DEG C., base exchanging as before to an Na2O content of less than 1%, washing, and drying, or (b) using a solution of at least 15 wt. per cent concentration until the Na2O content is less than 1%, then washing, and calcining at 700-1040 DEG C. The exchanges may be carried out at 25-150 DEG C. using a 5-600% excess of an ammonium or tetraethylammonium chloride or sulphate. The H+ or ammonium ions may be replaced by Y, rare earths (La to Lu), Al, Pt, and other metals of groups 8, 18, 28 and 2A. The initial faujasite may be natural or may be prepared by forming a mixture of composition .Na2O/SiO2 .. .. ...0.2-0.8 .SiO2/Al2O3 .. .. ...7-30 .H2O/Na2O .. .. ...20-60 ageing and heating to crystallize
