Abstract
Dipotassium rhodizonate <FORM:1115335/C2/1> is prepared by polycondensing glyoxal oxidatively in the presence of a potassium salt of carbonic acid and a potassium salt of sulphurous acid. Suitable salts are the carbonate, bicarbonate, sulphite and bisulphite. The condensation is carried out at a pH of 7.5-9.0 and is catalysed by potassium cyanide. The process is carried out in an aqueous solvent at room temperature or while heating in a stream of air or oxygen. Dipotassium rhodizonate has anti-diabetic activity and it can be made up into a pharmaceutical composition with a solid or liquid carrier (see Division A5).ALSO:A pharmaceutical composition for the treatment of diabetes comprises dipotassium rhodizonate together with a solid or liquid carrier. The compositions are made up into the form of tablets capsules, pills, suspensions and solutions.
