In a tyre moulding press for curing radial ply tyres inflated by an air bag or bladder, elements 31 of a segmental crown or tread mould are carried upon dependent yokes 23 of an upper movable press plate 20, via a pin 24 and slot 33 connection, and are radially expansible by engagement of inclined cam surfaces 32a, 32b and 23b, 23c on elements 31 and yokes 23 respectively whereby, in the open position of the tyre press (Fig. 5, not shown) the elements 31 are radially expanded by an upper sidewall mould component 25 loaded into contact with the upper surface 36 thereof by springs 22 and, upon lowering of the upper press plate 20, surface 37 of the element 31 contacts surface 41 of stationary lower sidewall mould component 40 and continued descent of the plate 20, via the pin and slot connection 24, 33 and the cam surfaces 32a, 32b and 23b, 23c, forces segments 31 radially inward into the mould closed position of abutting relationship at shoulders 39, 38 with sidewall mould components 40 and 25, the latter whereof contacts the upper ring of the inflation bag and is contacted by plate 20 which is prevented from further downward movement. Springs 22 may be replaced by hydraulic cylinders.
