Abstract

A polyolefin surface may be printed by heating the surface and applying an ink comprising a colourant and binder codispersed in a carnic liquid to the surface while still hot. The surface may also be heated during and/or after application of the ink. Suitable inks contain 0.33-25 parts by weight carrier, 1 pt colourant, and up to 0.15 pt additives per part binder. In Examples I-III inks comprising low molecular weight polyethylene, liquid paraffin and a red pigment (plus toluene in Example III) are applied to polyethylene; in Examples IV and VII, the ink comprises ethyl cellulose, xylene and red colourant, in Example V low M.W. polyethylene, the pentaerythritol ester of hydrogenated resin, liquid paraffin and a blue pigment, and in Example VI, the phthalate ester of hydroabietyl alcohol, liquid parafin and a yellow dyestuff. Polypropylene surfaces are also specified.
