Abstract

In a surveyor's level which is equipped with means for vertically displacing the optical sighting axis through a substantial distance, a digital system is provided for measuring the displacement which displays and/or records the readings. As shown, a sleeve 11 is mounted at one end on a tripod 13, bearings 11a 11b in the sleeve 11 journalling a nut 14, which is rotatable to displace a hollow lead screw 16 which is guided by a cross-slide 17 movable on guide bars 18 connected to the sleeve 11. The lead screw 16 is internally coupled to a stem 22 moved upwardly and downwardly by a cable system 33, 35 and 23, 27 the stem being connected through the cable system to an electrode head 36. A shaft 37, mounted on the electrode head, is provided with annular rings which are fed with A. C. current such that, as the electrode head 36 is displaced over the rings during upward or downward movement of apparatus, the induced signals are fed to a recording device or taped. The telescope may be mounted on the upper end of the stem 22, or alternatively it may be attached at a fixed height and the reflector system movably mounted on the stem.
