Abstract
1,260,617. Gyroscopic apparatus; stabilized base mounts. HOLLANDSE SIGNAALAPPARATEN N.V. May 5, 1970 [May 8, 1969], No.21659/70. Headings G1C and G1F. A stable base mount comprises a base member 1 for supporting a radar antenna or a television or infra-red camera, a gimbal system supporting or base member 1 and mounted at the upper end of a hollow column 13, and a gyroscopically controlled servo drive system mounted at the lower end of the hollow column 13 and arranged by way of transmission means 15 in the interior of the hollow column 13 to maintain the base member in a preset orientation. As shown, the base member 1 is pivotally mounted by bearings 7 defining a rotational axis 3 on a gimbal ring 5 which is pivotally mounted about an axis 2 orthogonal to the axis 3 on supports 4 attached to the top of the hollow column 13. A gyro 9 vertically mounted within one of the bearings 7 is arranged to supply signals in accordance with any departure of the gyro's spin axis from vertical and such signals are arranged to drive electric motors 33, 41 Fig. 3 of the servo drive system which are drivably connected by way of gear trains 32, 40 to gear segments 30 and 38. The gear segments 30 and 38 are respectively attached to an outer gimbal ring 27 and an inner gimbal ring 22 which are pivotally mounted about orthogonal axes 23, 24, and the inner ring 22 is mechanically linked by rods 15 to the base member 1 so that driving the segments 30, 38 causes longitudinal movement of the rods 15 to effect such movement of the base member 1 to reduce the signals supplied by the gyroscope 9 to zero. The orthogonal axes 23, 24 are respectively parallel to the orthogonal axes 2, 3 and the outer ring 27 is supported by bearings 28 in fixed supports 25, 26 while the inner ring 22 is supported by bearings 29 in the outer ring 27. The base member 1 is provided with a plate 18 which is connected to a rubber bellows 19 attached to the column 13 to form a housing. A directional gyro 8 Fig. 1 with its spin axis horizontal may be provided for use in correcting azimuthal errors and stop elements 36, 44, 45, Fig. 3 which are co-operable with abutments 34, 35 and 42 and 43 respectively may be provided to prevent excessive fitting of the rings 27 and 22.
