Abstract
1,113,801. Vehicle suspensions. MOULTON DEVELOPMENTS Ltd. 22 July, 1966 [23 April, 1965], No. 17179/65. Heading B7D. A motor vehicle suspension comprises a wheel support arm 2 against which bears a strut 5 connected to the piston 6 of an " hydraulic displacer unit " which comprises a housing 7, skirt 8 and flexible diaphragm ] 0. The skirt 8 and piston 6 have inverse conical surfaces so as to vary the rate at which fluid is expelled from the unit through orifices 13 when the arm 2 rises. The unit is connected by means of an inextensible but possibly flexible conduit 12 with a number of hydraulic " accumulator springs " 15a, 15b and 15c arranged in parallel, each of which comprises a shell 20 and a rubber body 21 which leaves a fluid space 22. The system is completely filled with fluid and fluid displaced from the unit 7 distends the rubber members 21 which exert a restoring force. The shells 20 may be conical or cylindrical in shape. Damper valves 14 and 24 may be included in the system and each spring 15a, 15b, 15c may have an isolating valve 25. The springs are located in a dead space of the vehicle. The suspension system of one wheel may be connected with the suspension system of another wheel either through the conduit 12 or by interconnection of the " displacer units." Some or all of the damper valves may be adjustable.
