Abstract

1,113,401. Perfluorocarbon polymer cables covering. HAVEG INDUSTRIES Inc. 29 Nov., 1965 [24 Dec., 1964], No. 50570/65. Heading H1A. [Also in Division B5] Tubing of perfluorocarbon polymer, examples are given, in particular PTFE tubing, is stretched by simultaneously flattening the tubing under pressure to reduce the cross-sectional area of the tubing wall and elongating the tube. The flattening may be achieved by one or more passes through calendering rolls or by using platens. In the embodiment shown extruded PTFE tubing 2 is passed between rolls 8, 10 which are heated, e.g. by hot liquid, to a quench tank 14 and then to spool 16 on which the tubing is collected. In a second stage, Fig. 2, a length of the treated tubing 24 has a lead wire 22 passed therethrough to introduce into the tubing an insulated or otherwise cable 26, having a diameter slightly less than that of tubing. Tubing 24 is shrunk on to the cable by passage of the assembly through a ring flame heater 28, see also Fig. 5 (not reproduced). To facilitate the entry of lead wire 22 into the tubing, end 18 may be heated by flame 20 to cause it to assume a circular cross-section from the flattened condition and air may be introduced to facilitate the further passage of wire 22 therethrough. Heating by heater 28 is preferably to a temperature within the range 260-150‹ C. In a modification the treated tubing is shrunk about a plurality of cables (32), Fig. 7 (not shown). In a second embodiment the extruded tubing is flattened and stretched by platens (40), (42), Fig. 8 (not shown). If the rolls or platens are not heated, the quench tanks may be dispensed with.
