An egg carton moulded from paper pulp &c. has a recessed tray 14 with upstanding grippers 16 along its centre line, two tub-shaped lids 13 hinged along the tray sides being turned inwards to close the carton, when their inner edges slide down into and are held frictionally within slots 20 in the grippers. The two lids 13 are together slightly greater in width than, and slightly less in length than, the tray 14, so that when the lids are shut they are distorted to fit over the tray. One lid 13 has a lip 31 along one external edge; when a number of the cartons are nested each with its lids and tray opened out flat into one plane, each lip 31 slightly separates its lid from the lid 13 of the tray below in which it is stacked, Fig. 9 (not shown). Unstacking of the cartons is thus facilitated. The cartons may be packed mechanically with eggs; the top carton of a stack of cartons is removed by mechanism (not further described) and filled by packing mechanism (also not further described); the two lids 13 are then hinged inwardly by closure mechanism (not further described) so that their inner edges slide down a central guide plate 29, Fig. 4 (not shown), disposed above the grippers 16. Finally, the edges of the two lids 13 slide off the lower edge of the guide plate 29 and their inner edges engage within the slots 20 in the grippers 16.
