Abstract
1,113,203. Luminescent screens. SYLVANIA ELECTRIC PRODUCTS Inc. 23 July, 1965 [23 July, 1964 (2)], No. 31580/65. Heading H1D. [Also in Division G2] A cathodoluminescent screen having phosphor particles adhered thereto in a predetermined pattern, e.g. a colour television screen, is made by forming on the screen a uniform layer of the phosphor particles carried in or on a resist layer of a clear photo-sensitized polymeric substance containing one or more alkane diols as photopolymerization accelerator, drying the resist layer and photographically exposing it through a negative to form in the layer a photopolymerized image consisting of phosphor particles bonded to the screen by the hardened resist in the said predetermined pattern, and developing the image by removing from the screen, e.g. by washing, the unexposed, unpolymerized resist material and the phosphor particles associated with it. The resist composition may also contain a trihydric alcohol to retard polymerization of the resist material in the unexposed areas of the resist. The process may be repeated and a cathode-ray screen having green, blue and red phosphors may be built up. The resist material may comprise photographic gelatine or polyvinyl alcohol sensitized with ammonium, potassium or sodium dichromate. The alkane diol may be 1:2- ethanediol, 1: 3 - propanediol, 1: 3 - and 1: 4- butanediol, 1: 4 - and 1: 5 - pentanediol and 1: 6-hexanediol, and the trihydric alcohol used as retarder may be glycerol and/or 1:2:4- butanetriol. The phosphors may be sulphides, oxides, tungstates, aluminates, borates,. selenides or silicates of zinc, cadmium, beryllium, magnesium, manganese, calcium or strontium and may be activated by silver, copper and manganese.
