Abstract
Stainless steel or other ferrous metal is blackened by immersion in an aqueous bath maintained at 220 DEG F. to 310 DEG F. and containing 2 to 12 lb/gallon of a composition comprising by weight:- 40 to 90 parts of an alkali metal hydroxide 0.1 to 50 parts of an alkali metal nitrate 0.1 to 50 parts of a water-soluble sulphur-bearing compound, reactive with the metal to form a black product, together with 0.0001 to 20 parts of a water-soluble molybdate or 0.0001 to 2 parts of a water soluble dichromate, or preferably both. Alkali metal molybdates and dichromates are preferred, and the bath may contain a wetting agent. Alkali metal and ammonium thiosulphates, thiocyanates and sulphides, thioureas, benzothiazyl disulphide, 2-mercaptoimidazoline and 2-mercaptobenzothiazole are stated to be suitable sulphur-bearing compounds. A protective coating of oil, wax or resin may be applied over the blackened surface.
