Abstract

1,112,444. Arc blow torches. BRITISH TITAN PRODUCTS CO. Ltd. 19 Aug., 1966 [15 June, 1965], No. 25193/65. Heading H5H. A process for initiating the arc of a plasma gun comprises continuously passing a primary gas between the electrodes which have a P.D. less than the breakdown potential of the primary gas, introducing :momentarily a secondary gas or gas mixture which produces a gaseous mixture having a breakdown potential less than the electrode P.D., discontinuing the secondary gas(es) when the arc is initiated and thereafter maintaining the arc in the primary gas. The primary gas may be oxygen and the secondary helium; or the primary may be hydrogen, nitrogen, chlorine, carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, ammonia, hydrogen chloride, nitrogen oxides, sulphur dioxide, methane, or argon (when not used as a secondary gas), and the secondary may be one or more of helium, neon or argon. Alternatively the primary gas may be helium or neon and one of the previous primary gases may be used as a secondary gas. The concentration of secondary gas is preferably greater than 90% and it is preferably introduced at 5 to 500 p.s.i. above the pressure between the electrodes. Preferably the secondary gas is introduced via a conduit in contact with one of the electrodes and is directed at the surface of the other electrode. Three diagrammatic embodiments of plasma gun are desoribed.
