Abstract

The invention comprises the salts of N-carbamyl-l-glumatic acid with organic bases other than lysine, the neutral salt of N-carbamyl-l-glutamic acid with lysine and the acid salt of N-carbamyl-l-glutamic acid with lysine in the pure state having a melting point of 191-3 DEG C. and an optical rotation of +11.7 DEG , which are prepared by salifying the acid with the appropriate organic base in an aqueous or alcoholic medium at room temperature or at about 80-90 DEG C. Suitable organic bases mentioned are morpholine, methylglucamine, amphetamine, pyridoxine, choline, arginine, ornithine, piperazine, dimethylaminoethanol and di-isopropylamine.ALSO:The invention comprises pharmaceutical compositions comprising as active ingredient a salt of N-carbamyl-l-glutamic acid with an organic base other than lysine, or the neutral salt of N-carbamyl-l-glutamic acid with lysine, and also pharmaceutical compositions in the form of a sterile injectable solution, suppository, tablet or capsule comprising as active ingredient the acid salt of N-carbamyl-l-glutamic acid with lysine. The compounds possess, in general, a hepatotropic effect and one or more of the following properties:- a favourable effect on growth, a restorative and regenerative action, a reducing effect on hyperammoniaemia, a neuro-regulating and neuro-stimulating action and an anti-fatigue action.
