Abstract

Compounds of the general formula: <FORM:0850298/IV(b)/1> (wherein R represents an alkyl radical of not more than 5 carbon atoms, or phenyl radical or a phenylalkyl radical of not more than 11 carbon atoms) are prepared by refluxing 4-p-chlorobenzoylpyridine with an organomagnesinium halide of the formula X-Mg.-R (wherein X represents chlorine, bromine or iodine). Acid addition salts of the bases are also described. The products are useful for potentiating or prolonging the action of centrally acting drugs (see Group VI). 4-p-Chlorobenzoylpyridine is prepared by refluxing isonicotinic acid chloride hydrochloride with chlorobenzene in the presence of aluminium chloride.ALSO:Pharmaceutical preparations comprise a centrally acting drug of the analgesic, ataraxic, hypnotic or sedative class and, as a potentiating or prolonging agent therefor, a base of the general formula: <FORM:0850298/VI/1> (wherein R represents an alkyl radical of not more than 5 carbon atoms, a phenyl radical, or a phenylalkyl radical of not more than 11 carbon atoms), or a non-toxic pharmaceutically acceptable acid addition salt thereof.
