Abstract

A control system for electrical apparatus enclosed in an atmosphere of a protective gas comprises means sensitive to the internal gas pressure to cut off the power supply in the event of a gas fault. As shown (Fig. 1), when the door of the housing is closed a switch 5 is operated to allow gas from a supply 1 to enter. The gas flow is measured at 3 and produces an electrical signal at 4 which is supplied to an AND gate 11. The internal gas pressure is measured at 8, and produces a signal at 9 which is also fed to gate 11. When both signals appear, the gate 11 initiates a timer 13 which closes the main supply 16 at the end of a predetermined period. If either input signal to the AND gate fails, timer 13 causes switch 16 to disconnect the power supply. In one modification (Fig. 4), the internal pressure gauge 8 initiates the timer 13 through a lower value preset switch 12. After a predetermined scavenging period, the timer 13 closes an exhaust valve 19 and the internal pressure rises to energise a higher value preset switch 15, which actuates the main supply switch 16. Other modifications are described.
