Abstract

1,112,309. Separating solids from gas or liquid; cyclone separators. M. BERZ and W. BERZ. 28 Sept., 1965 [29 Sept., 1964; 17 May, 1965; 28 July, 1965], No. 41148/65. Headings BID, BIT and B2P. A gas or liquid is cleaned of entrained solids by passage through a bed of filtering material, such as gravel, the gas or liquid being delivered on to the upper face of the filtering bed while undergoing rotational motion, so as to impinge on the bed at an angle of 5 to 50 degrees. In Fig. 1 the bed 3 is located in what is basically a cyclone separator from which clean gas leaves by duct 6. An airlock and screw conveyor 9 remove deposited dust which has penetrated bed 3, and periodically damper 7 is closed and bed 3 cleaned by reverse flow gas delivered to chamber 4 and leaving by conduit 8, to waste or separate cleaning and return to inlet 1. In Figs. 2, 3 (not shown) the gas is cleaned in a separate cyclone separator and delivered, still rotating, down a connecting conduit to the filtering bed. In Fig. 2 a blower (110) downstream of the bed (107) delivers reverse-flow gas via vanes (113) so that it too enters the bed, from below, rotating. The reverse flow gas is then delivered to a depositing chamber or filter (114), or returned to the inlet side of the cyclone separator (102), or delivered by the filter bed inlet conduit (104) back to cyclone separator (102) through its outlet, which has vanes (105) which serve to swirl the reverse flow gas and similarly to impart rotation to gas flowing out of the cyclone through conduit (104) to the filter. Fig. 3 shows a cyclone separator with an adjustable shutter (126) on its inlet and a vertically adjustable outlet pipe (124) with vanes (125), whereby maximum efficiency of the cyclone and maximum swirling of the outgoing gas en route to the filter are achieved. In Fig. 4 (not shown) gas passes from the cyclone (304) to a housing above containing two filter beds (302, 303) and while some gas passes downwards through both beds in series a variable quantity is delivered by tangential, closable apertures (311) to the space between the beds and passes through the lower bed only. A rotatable hub tube (308) carries members (309, 310) for smoothing the beds after reverse flow cleaning. In a modified arrangement (Fig. 5, not shown) rotation of the gas between the two beds is induced by supply of clean gas from an auxiliary central tangential inlet (321). The filter beds may be fibrous material supported only below or may be replaced by gratings, sintered or felted sheets. Gas rotation may be enhanced by rotary vanes and filter elements may vary in porosity over width and thickness.
