Abstract

A process for the dehydrogenation and condensation of a secondary alcohol to a ketone comprises contacting the alcohol at elevated temperature with a catalyst comprising Ni, ZnO and an alkali or alkaline earth metal phosphate. The feedstock alcohol is preferably C3- 8. Examples describe the dehydrogenation of hexanols-2 and -3, themselves prepared by hydration of n-hexenes. Part of the product comprised hexanones-2 and -3 which was recycled to the reaction zone. Product comprising C12 unsaturated ketones was found to contain small amounts of the corresponding saturated ketones. Hydrogenation of the mixture over a PtO2 catalyst yielded two isomeric C12 ketones viz. 7-methyl undecanone-5 and 7-ethyldecanone-5.ALSO:Dehydrogenation catalysts are made by mixing an alkali or alkaline earth metal phosphate with an aqueous slurry formed from nickel formate, zinc oxide and ammonia, drying the mixture, reacting in a stream of air and finally reducing at elevated temperature in a stream of hydrogen. In examples the catalyst is seived to 10-18 mesh. Compositions containing Ca3(PO4)2, Li3PO4 and p Mg3(PO4)2 are described.
