Abstract

1,112,196. Preparing surfaces for printing. W. R. GRACE & CO. 6 Aug., 1965 [26 Aug., 1964], No. 33858/65. Heading B6C. [Also in Division H1] In apparatus, for corona treating film 14 to improve printability, including at least two spaced-apart electrodes between which A.C. is applied, one of the electrodes is either a thin flexible sheet 13 or an arcuate plate of sintered material (20), Fig. 2 (not shown). The film 14 enters a frame 2 through a slot 3 and passes under guide rollers 5, 7 and over a roller 4 of steel with a covering 12 of rubber, glass, epoxy resins and elastomers, or an anodized coating, which is driven by a motor 8 and acts as an electrode, being grounded through a connection 17. The sheet 13 may be a foil of aluminium, copper, iron, steel or brass, and is supported at one edge only from a bracket 9. The free portion of the foil is stated to adjust itself automatically to corona producing distance from the roller 4. The foil may be wrinkled. The alternative sintered electrode may be of stainless steel, steel or aluminium, and gases may be passed through it to the treating zone. Preferred frequencies of 10 to 1000 kc./sec. and voltages of 500 to 10,000 volts are mentioned.
