Abstract

The invention comprises a mixture of compounds each having the general formula <FORM:1111970/C2/1> in which R1 and R2 are C1- 4 alkyl groups, R3 is a hydrocarbon radical of the residual acid monomer left after the thermal or thermal-catalytic polymerization of higher unsaturated fatty acids containing 8-24 carbon atoms, or a radical derived from the said hydrocarbon radical by hydrogenation, X is an anion and n is an integer equal to the valency of the said anion. The compounds are prepared by reacting an amine of the formula (R3)2NH with an appropriate alkylating agent. The amines (R3)2NH are obtained from the residual acid monomer by reaction with NH3 to give the nitrile which is then hydrogenated in the presence of a catalyst. Unsaturation present initially in R3 may be reduced by hydrogenation of the acid monomer or during the conversion of the nitrile to the amine.ALSO:A method of softening textiles and of improving the rewetting characteristics thereof comprises distributing on the surface of the fibres thereof a mixture of compounds each having the general formula <FORM:1111970/D1-D2/1> in which R1 and R2 are C1-4 alkyl groups, R3 is a hydrocarbon radical of the residual acid monomer left after the thermal or thermal-catalytic polymerisation of higher unsaturated fatty acids containing 8-24 carbon atoms, or a radical derived from the said hydrocarbon radical by hydrogenation, X is an anion and N is an integer equal to the valency of the said anion. The compounds are preferably applied in the form of a composition comprising the above mixture of compounds plus a liquid carrier. Specified liquid carriers are water, alone or together with an organic solvent such as a C1-4 aliphatic alcohol, e.g. isopropanol. The treatment of birdseye cotton is described in detail.
