Abstract

Hydrocarbon liquids are dehydrated by contacting them with activated klinoptilolite having a particle size not greater than 1 mm., the activation having been effected by contacting the klinoptilolite with an aqueous potassium or sodium salt solution, washing salt free with water and heating in a stream of inert gas to effect drying. Hydrocarbons which may be dehydrated by the process include aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbons e.g. benzene, toluene, n-heptane, white spirit and cyclohexane. The liquid to be dehydrated is preferably fed down a column packed with activated klinoptilolite, the ratio of solid klinoptilolite to the liquid passing through the column (kg:litres hours-1) being from 1.0:0.3 to 1.0:15.ALSO:Klinoptilolite having a particle size not greater than 1 mm. is activated by contacting it with an aqueous solution of a potassium or sodium salt, washing salt-free with water and heating in a stream of inert gas to effect drying. In examples, potassium chloride is used in the activation. Drying may be at about 400 DEG C. in a stream of nitrogen.ALSO:Organic liquids are dehydrated by contacting them with activated klinoptilolite having a particle size not greater than 1 mm., the activation having been effected by contacting the klinoptilolite with an aqueous potassium or sodium salt solution, washing saltfree with water and heating in a stream of inert gas to effect drying. Organic liquids which may be de hydrated by the process include dichloro methane and other halogen-containing organic liquids, alcohols e.g. ethanol, isopropanol, aliphatic and aromatic ethers, esters e.g. butyl malonate, ketones e.g. acetone, tetrahydrofuran, pyridine and diethylcarbonate. The organic liquid to be dehydrated is preferably fed down a column packed with activated klinoptilolite, the ratio of solid klinoptilolite to the liquid passing through the column (kg. : litres hours-1) being from 1.0:0.3 to 1.0:15.ALSO:A process of dehydrating organic liquids comprises contacting the liquid to be dehydrated with activated klinoptilolite having a particle size not greater than 1 m.m., the klinoptilolite having been activated by contacting with an aqueous solution of a potassium or sodium salt, washing saltfree with water and heating in a stream of inert gas to effect drying. In examples potassium chloride is used in the activation. Drying may be at about 400 DEG C. in a stream of nitrogen. The organic liquid is preferably fed down a column packed with activated klinoptilolite, the ratio of solid klinoptilolite to the liquid passing through the column (kg: litres hours-1) being from 1.0:0.3 to 1.0:15. Many organic liquids which may be treated according to the invention are listed including halogen containing organic liquids, alcohols, ethers, esters, hetones, aliphatic and armatic hydrocarbons, tetrahydrofuran, pyridine and diethyl carbonate.
