Abstract

111,171. Weygang, C. Nov. 22, 1916. Plastic compositions containing casein, gelatin, &c., celluloid, and india-rubber.-A rubber-like product is made by digesting casein or animal glues in carbolic or acetic acid and treating the product with formic acid, formates, formalin, chromic salts, alums, tannic acid or a mixture of these. Glycerine, zinc oxide or carbonate, hydrated lime, molten pitch, solutions of resinous gums, rubber, or celluloid or the like and diluents such as alcohol and mineral oils may be added prior to the latter treatment. In an example, 1 part by weight of gelatin is treated with 1-2 parts of crude carbolic acid at a temperature not exceeding 180‹ F. and subsequently 5-25 per cent. of glycerine is added and from 1-4 parts of pitch to 1 part of the gelatinous mixture. When a preponderance of pitch is added, the formic acid or other fixing- agent may be omitted. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specifications 4343/74, 18864/96, 15115/98, 926/01, 27090/04, 12277/05, 12278/05, 23031/07, 4154/09, 18694/09, 26093/10, and 17242/14.
