Plastic compositions containing glutinous matter, starch, &c. or india-rubber, starch, &c. -A rubber substitute is made by mixing comminuted animal tissue, such as sinews, after heating with an astringent solution such as zinc chloride or hydrochloric acid, with starchy matter, such as powdered tapioca. The dough thus formed. after being dried, is preferably mixed with a small proportion of rubber latex or a solution of rubber or resin, for example 6 to 12 per cent of rubber dissolved in turpentine. The product is heated until it is tough and may be applied as a dressing to leather, canvas, or other fibrous base.
