The moisture content of a moulding sand, for foundry work, is measured in a measuring cell (not shown) which has a mechanical means to compress the sand to a degree wherein the value of the filling factor corresponds to its required condition when moulding, and the sand in the cell forms the dielectric of a capacitor connected in a tuning circuit of an oscillator the magnitude of the direct current feed to which is taken as a measure of moisture content. In order to reduce the effect of the loss resistance due to moisture on the circuit Q and on the measurements, the cell is connected in the tuning circuit as shown in Fig. 1, where C m , R m represent the capacitance and loss resistance of the cell and C 1 , R 1 represent the capacitance and loss resistance of a low loss standard capacitor, in series with the cell across an inductor L. The variation in capacitance of the cell in proportion to the moisture content results in a corresponding variation in the direct current supplied to the oscillator, which current is measured in an ammeter calibrated directly in percentage moisture content.
