Abstract

1,111,689. Airships. P. DESMARTEAU. 22 July, 1965 [23 July, 1964], No. 31207/65. Heading B7W. A hot air airship comprises an elongate envelope 1, and a duct 10 extending axially thereof and containing a ducted fan turbine engine 18 providing propulsive thrust and hot gases to heat the air in the envelope. The envelope is a flexible laminate of aluminium foil and synthetic plastic and is lined with insulating material. The duct 10 is made of a flexible heat resistant and heat conducting material such as cobalt alloy. The outer surface of the envelope and the inner and outer surfaces of the duct are covered by netting 5 attached by radial cables 6, 13 (Fig. 2, not shown) to circumferential cables 7 between the envelope and the duct. Afterburners 38 are provided in the duct downstream of the engine, and a universally swivellable nozzle 37 is provided at the duct outlet. The turbine exhaust gases may be deflected through a branch pipe (26, Fig. 6, not shown) into the envelope space (25) by deformable turning vanes (33). The envelope contains inlets and outlets 39, 40 to control the pressure therein, and fans 41 to prevent stratification of the air and gas in the space 25.
