Abstract
1,111,590. Films having hydrophilic surfaces. O. H. DRAGER, [trading as DRAGERWERK HEINR. & BERNH. DRAGER]. 2 Dec., 1965 [5 Dec., 1964], No. 51311/65. Heading B5B. [Also in Division G2] A process for the production of a transparent film or sheet formed from an artificial plastics material having one or more saponifiable groups and having an hydrophilic surface substantially resistant to misting, comprises treating a surface of said film or sheet with an alkali or an acid and thereafter treating the resulting surface with an acid or an alkali respectively, whereby there is obtained a transparent film having an hydrophilic surface substantially resistant to misting. Suitably, the artificial plastics material is a cellulose or a cellulose derivative, especially a cellulose ester, and the treatment of the surface with an acid or an alkali may be carried out in the presence of an oxidizing agent or a reducing agent. The surface may be subsequently treated with a wetting agent, suitably a sulphonate, in the presence of heat. For example, the surface so treated, cleaned with water and dried, may have its treated surface thinly coated with a wetting agent concentrate and heated to 60‹ to 80‹ C. for a short time in a drying chamber. The excess wetting agent may then be rinsed off and the surface dried. It is also possible to use chemical reactions of the saponified cellulose ester with sulphonates or other suitable substances in order to increase the hydrophilic effect. Such surface treatment may be applied to films and sheets used as visor windows or clear-vision windows for respiratory apparatus masks or diving masks, as such treatment obviates the risk of the window becoming clouded with precipitation of moisture on the visor window. The inside surface of such windows can receive condensed water vapour in any quantity and water can flow off the surface again without the hydrophilic properties of the surface becoming less effective on prolonged use, since owing to the hydrophilic behaviour of the surface, a coherent film of water forms thereon and the window remains clearly transparent.
