1,111,527. Improving commutation in dynamo-electric machines. PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd. 17 June, 1965 [20 June, 1964], No. 25674/65. Heading H2A. In a commutating arrangement for small motors, e.g. for battery-operated record players, a discoidal printed commutator co-operates with brushes comprising at least two separate spring arms 10, 11 whose contact ends 16a, 16b are staggered with respect to the commutator. They are also skewed, either by angling the brushes, as shown, or by using curved slots 4 between the segments. Commutation is improved by the use of idle sectors 8 or gaps on the commutator and by the use of resistors 14 and capacitors 15 between the brush arms. The brushes may be of phosphor-bronze, and the commutator segments of copper, palladium, palladium-silver alloy, silver-copper alloy, or gold-plated nickel. The brush arms may lie one above the other.
