Abstract

Coke e.g. for blast furnace burden, is produced by charging pellets of fine grained solid carbonaceous material to a rotary kiln having a temperature of at least 500 DEG C., the pellets being heated to a hardening temperature at a rate of at least 20 DEG C. per minute, and preferably at 30 DEG C. to 50 DEG C. per minute. The pellets should be dried before delivery to the kiln, and may comprise 15 to 30% b.w. caking coal, and/or may include pitch or tar as a binder, the solid non-caking component comprising high volatile content coal, anthracite, coke fines, lignite, wood powder or their charring products. The heat carrier may comprise coke pellet product or raw coal, or may be iron ore which is thereby prereduced before treatment in a blast furnace. The pellets are dried by heat produced by burning volatiles from the coking process. The temperature rate is controlled by controlling the rate of introduction of the pellets into the kiln and/or by controlling the supply of heat to the kiln.
