Abstract

Novel sodium and cupric salts of b -(2-thienyl)-acrylic acid are prepared by reacting thiophene with dimethylformamide and phosphorus oxychloride to form thenoic aldehyde which is then condensed with malonic acid to give b -(2-thienyl) acrylic acid and converted to the said salts, e.g. by reaction with a hydroxide or weak acid salt of the metal concerned Pharmaceutical compositions comprising the sodium or cupric salt of b -(thienyl)acrylic acid as active ingredient, together with a pharmaceutically acceptable diluent, are useful for intestinal disinfection. Animal feed compositions contain the said salts as growth factors.
