Abstract
In a continuous and automatic process for pelleting carbon black in which the black is first wetted with a liquid, the flow rate of liquid is adjusted to maintain a predetermined ratio between it and the weight of the wetted black. Carbon black may be produced by combustion of hydrocarbons and is separated and fed via a surge tank, and one single or two tiered screw conveyers or a star valve or vibra screw, to pin mixers, where it is sprayed with oil. The black is then fed on to a weigh belt and pelleted in a rotary drum. Flow rate of oil (measured via pressure differential across an orifice) and weight of black are converted using transducers into pneumatic signals. These signals are compared in a controller, and if there is any divergence from the required ratio, the flow rate of oil is adjusted via a pressure-responsive valve. Air is supplied for operating the pneumatic devices. Alternatively, an electro-mechanical transducer (e.g. a potentiometer) and a servomechanism controller may be used, and a comparison made of voltage instead of gas pressures.
