Abstract

1,110,065. Foam-backed p.v.c. articles. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 4 July, 1966 [15 July, 1965; 30 Dec., 1965], Nos. 30065/65 and 55228/65. Heading B5A. Shaped articles of vinyl chloride polymer compositions having a wear-resistant akin with an integral foamed backing e.g. car seat covers are formed by (i) applying a powdered vinyl chloride polymer and plasticizer composition e.g. by pouring or spraying to a mould surface of the desired shape, said surface being at or heated to a temperature so that the polymer sticks to the surface thereof (ii) removing excess polymer (iii) heating to form an homogeneous layer (i.e. no discrete particles), (iv) applying to this layer a polymeric composition containing foaming agent, said layer being at a temperature so that the composition sticks thereto (v) removing any excess desired (vi) heating so as to foam and gel said composition. The vinyl chloride polymer may be a homopolymer of vinyl chloride or a copolymer thereof with up to 20% by wt. of other monomers, preferably has a Fikentscher K value of 50-60, and the composition may also have a plasticizer content of 50-100, preferably 60-80 parts by wt. for every 100 parts of vinyl chloride polymer. The foamable composition may also be a vinyl chloride polymer e.g. a homopolymer of vinyl chloride or a copolymer thereof with up to 20% of other monomers and may also contain plasticizer.
