Abstract

In the production of fibres having uniform, stable and three-dimensional crimps, a tow of spun, heated or unheated, stretched or unstretched continuous filaments of polyvinyl alcohol is mechanically crimped e.g. in a compression chamber; the filaments are cut to staple length; the fibres are entangled (by virtue of this "primary" crimp) in an opening machine; relative movement of the fibres is constrained by surrounding or supporting them with or on a plastic e.g. polyvinyl alcohol, porous bag or wire gauze; and these fibres are acetalised e.g. with formaldehyde or benzaldehyde solution in which the fibres are immersed or with which they are sprayed, in order to develop (and set) a secondary crimping. Primary and secondary crimps may be permanently retained in the fibres.
