Abstract
A thixotropic oil base packer fluid comprises: (a) an oil phase; (b) 1-15% by wt. of an alkali metal soap of a disproportionated rosin acid; (c) 30-150 lb. per barrel (0.8-0.43 kg./l) of a finely divided mixture comprising asbestos and at least one inorganic siliceous filteraid; and (d) an alkaline earth base at least chemically equivalent to the soap. The filteraid in (c) may be vermiculite, perlite, attapulgite, diatomaceous earth, synthetic silica or a synthetic siliceous compound. The alkaline earth base (d) may be Ca(OH)2, CaO, MgO, SrO, or BaO and reacts metathetically with soap (b); it may be added as solid, in aqueous solution, or in oil dispersion. The soap (b) may be prepared by disproportionating rosin with a hydrogenation catalyst at an elevated temperature, followed by saponification with alkali. Oil (a) preferably contains asphalt. Other, optional, additives are barytes, calcium carbonate, or ferric oxide. The fluid is used for sealing in oil wells.
