Abstract

A water in oil emulsion comprises an oil base; 2-65% by weight of an aqueous phase containing sufficient alkaline earth base to raise its pH to at least 9; 1-15 lbs/bbl of a fatty acid residue containing polymerized fatty acids, the fatty acid residue being reacted to form an alkaline earth soap; 0.5-10 lbs/bbl of a purified tall oil containing 15-45% by weight of rosin acids, the tall oil being reacted to form an alkaline earth soap. The aqueous phase may also contain an alkali metal or alkaline earth metal salt. A fluid concentrate of the surfactant comprises a mixture of the residue fatty acids and purified tall oil acids described above, the weight ratio of residue acids to tall oil acids varying from 0.5 to 10, and optionally a mineral oil. A solid concentrate comprises a similar mixture of acids absorbed on enough finely divided absorbent, for example clays, diatomaceous earths, aluminium silicates, sawdust, calcium carbonate, to give a free flowing mixture, and optionally an alkaline earth base.
