Abstract

Lubricating grease compositions comprise (a) a mineral or synthetic oil; (b) an organophilic bentonite; (c) an alkaline earth metal salt of a C16- 18 monocarboxylic acid (e.g. stearic acid); and (d) an alkaline earth metal salt of a C1- 8 monocarboxylic acid (e.g. acetic acid). Components (c) and (d) are preferably calcium salts. During the grease preparation the bentonite may be swelled by the presence of a small amount of methanol.
