Abstract

N-substituted sulphamates are produced by reacting sulphur trioxide in the vapour phase with a monoalkylamine or monocycloalkylamine in the vapour phase. Suitable amines are, for example, cyclohexylamine, isopropylamine, isobutylamine and isoamylamine. The process is preferably carried out at a temperature in the range 160-200 DEG C. and may be carried out in the presence of an inert gaseous diluent. Preferably the amine: sulphur trioxide molar ratio is about 2:1 so that the corresponding quaternary ammonium N-substituted sulphamate is formed. The amine salt may be converted by the usual methods into the acid or a metal salt, for example, the sodium or calcium salt. Examples are given of the preparation of (a) cyclohexylammonium N-cyclohexyl sulphamate with some N,N1-dicyclohexyl sulphamide and cyclohexylammonium sulphate; and (b) isoamylammonium N-isoamyl sulphamate with some N,N1-di-isoamyl sulphamide and isoamylammonium sulphate.
