Abstract
1,109,366. Safety devices for towing connections. E. T. RIDDIOUGH. 1 March, 1966 [2 Dec., 1964], No. 48904/64. Headings B7J and B7T. A safety device for connection between a towing vehicle and a trailer, e.g. a caravan, connected by a ball-and-socket towing connection, comprises a chain 20 passed with freedom to slide through an eye 24 on a rear plate 18 secured to the trailer, and releasably locked to a front plate 19 secured to the towing vehicle by means of a steel pin 21 engaging both chain end links at 25 and having an eye 27 aligned with an eye (not shown) in the front plate 19 for engagement by the hook of a padlock 28. The rear plate 18 is secured to the trailer by fixing bolts 22 of a cylinder 17 which loads by compression springs or hydraulically, a rotatable ram carrying the socket (not shown) of the towing connection. The front plate 19 is secured to the towing vehicle by the fixing bolts of a plate 14 which carries on an arm 13 the ball 12 of the towing connection. When the trailer is not being towed, the socket is rotated until inverted and the socket handle is secured by the padlocked chain 20, to prevent unauthorized towing of the trailer.
