Abstract

A fumaric acid-containing composition having an improved rate of cold water solubility comprises a finely ground fumaric acid powder having a minor dimension below about 20 microns coated with (A) a water-dispersible, edible wetting agent consisting of dioctyl sodium sulphosuccinate, sodium lauryl sulphate, sodium lauryl sulphoacetate, sorbitan monolaurate and/or a polyoxyethylene sorbitan fatty acid ester containing from 12 to 18 carbon atoms in the fatty acid group; and (B) a water-dispersible, edible polymeric substance consisting of pectins (particularly apple or citrus pectin), methyl cellulose and/or polyvinyl pyrrolidone, wherein the wetting agent (A) and polymeric substance (B) are each present in an amount to provide from 0.05% to 1% by weight of the total composition. The fatty acid moiety of the polyoxyethylene compound may be monolaurate, monostearate or tristearate. The compositions are prepared by drying the finely-divided fumaric acid in contact with a solution (water) containing the appropriate substituents as follows: (a) finely ground fumaric acid is slurried in an aqueous solution of the appropriate additives and the slurry is spray-dried; (b) fumaric acid is coated with a solution of the appropriate additives by mechanical mixing and the product is dried; and (c) fumaric acid is spray coated with a solution of the appropriate additives as it is being ground in a mill and the product is dried.ALSO:A fumaric acid-containing composition having an improved rate of cold water solubility comprises a finely ground fumaric acid powder having a minor dimension below about 20 microns coated with (A) a water-dispersible, edible wetting agent consisting of dioctyl sodium sulphosuccinate, sodium lauryl sulphate, sodium lauryl sulphoacetate, sorbitan monolaurate and/or a polyoxyethylene sorbitan fatty acid ester containing from 12 to 18 carbon atoms in the fatty acid group; and (B) a water-dispersible, edible polymeric substance consisting of pectins (particularly apple or citrus pectin), methyl cellulose and/or polyvinyl pyrrolidone, wherein the wetting agent (A) and polymeric substance (B) are each present in an amount to vide from 0.05 to 1% by weight of the total composition. The fatty acid moiety of the polyoxyethylene compound may be monolaurate, monostearate or tristearate. The compositions are prepared by drying the finely-divided fumaric acid in contact with a solution (water) containing the appropriate substituents as follows: (a) finely ground fumaric acid is slurried in an aqueous solution of the appropriate additives and the slurry is spray-dried; (b) fumaric acid is coated with a solution of the appropriate additives by mechanical mixing and the product is dried; and (c) fumaric acid is spray-coated with a solution of the appropriate additives as it is being ground in a mill and the product is dried.
