Solutions of sodium or potassium silicate are gelled with lactones or carbonic acid esters. b -Propiolactone, dimethyl propiolactone, g -butyrolactone, g -valerolactone, g -caprolactone, d -valerolactone, d -gluconolactone, d -caprolactone, e -caprolactone and mixtures thereof, ethylene and/or propylene carbonate are exemplified. Inorganic salts, preferably having an oxidizing action, may also be present, and a large number is specified.
