Abstract

A master composition for an anti-firedamp explosive comprises crystals consisting of alkali metal nitrate and NH4Cl which are derived by reacting NH4NO3 with at least one alkali metal chloride. The alkali metal chloride has a particle size of 0.1 to 1.0 mm. The composition can be mixed with a sensitizing agent and/or a carbonaceous material, e.g. nitro-glycero-glycol, nitro-cotton, cellulose wood fibre, wood flour, bagasse, peat, expanded polystyrene and ureaformaldehyde resin foam. The composition is formed by aging the reaction mixture in the presence of at least 0.1% wt. of moisture, drying as necessary and breaking up the mass.
