Protectors, inserting and attaching.-The whole of the studs, hob nails, or other protectors are driven into the heel or sole of a boot or shoe in one operation, and, in the case of a heel, preferably at the same time as the heel is attached to the boot. In one arrangement, the heads 3, Fig. 1, of the protectors are inserted in recesses 2 in a die plate 1, which is furnished with upstanding breast gauges 5 and spring fingers 7 for positioning purposes. The heel to be loaded is partially driven on to the points of the protectors, and the die plate and heel are then placed in the heelattaching machine. In another arrangement, the protectors may be inserted in a heel-building or a heel-compressing machine, and their heads may then be protected by a recessed plate during heelattaching. In another arrangement, a recessed die plate 11, Figs. 6 and 7, may be removably arranged in a carrier 12 provided with a base 13, the carrier being furnished with pins 14 to receive a positioning-member 15 into which a heel 8 is dropped; the insertion of the protectors is then carried out as before. The die plates may be magnetized. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specifications 14749/90, 22865/95, and 6430/96, [all in Class 17, Boots &c.].
