Description

METHOD OF MAKING SHOES.
APPLICATEON HLED MAR. 30. 1918.
,f iNVENI ATTORNEY vmi iherco clenched portions of the tacks or as shown in Fig. 2, the one nearest the toe preferably receives the clenching plate first and when all of the necessary tacks have been placed between said slit and said toe the plate is removed and re-inserted through the other slit whereupon additional tacks may be driven through the middle sole between the tWo slits.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that by our improved method We are enabled to secure the inner sole of a shoe to the middle sole by means of tacks or other fastening devices and at the same time make the inside'of the shoe free from exposed other fastening means. Furthermore it will be seen that by constructing the inner sole of two layers, namely: the sock lining 3 and insole 4, the insole can be constructed of any suitable material while a very cheap material such as canvas, cork or other substitute for leather can be used for the insole ii as the same is not exposed at any portion.
we claim as our invention .1. The herein described method of manufacturing shoes which consists in forming a slit in an inner sole, securing said inner sole to a lining sole, inserting a clenching plate through said slit to dispose the same between said soles, nailing a middle sole to the insole and clenching the nails on said plate, and thereafter removing said plate.
2. The herein described method of manufacturing stitch-down shoes which consists in forming a double layer inner sole with prepared'slits in one layer for receiving a clenching tool to be disposed between the layers, inserting the tool in one of the slits, applying a middle sole to the inner sole and driving fastening members throughthe middle sole and that portion of the layer oi the inner sole covered by the clenching tool and clenching said members against the tool, in withdrawing the tool and inserting it in a second slit to cover another portion of the layer of the inner sole, in driving fastening members through the middle sole and inner sole layer aiul-rlenching them against the tool and then removing the tool.
In testimony that we claim the foregoing we have hereunto set our hands at Wausau, in the county of ;\'Iarathon, and State of \Visconsin.
