Abstract

Paste rosin size has dissolved therein as a fortifying agent a cationic "non-thermosetting" polymer containing a plurality of alkylene linkages and at least 10 amine nitrogen atoms per molecule. In this context "non-thermosetting" includes fully thermoset polymers. Specified classes of polymers are (a) polyalkylene-polyamines e.g polyethyleneimine or the equimolar reaction product of ethylene dichloride and triethylene tetramine or 3,31-iminobispropylamine; (b) linear polyamidopolyamines, e.g. from adipic acid and tetraethylenepentamine; (c) reaction products of (b) with an epihalohydrin; (d) linear polycondensates of methylenebisacrylamide and ethylene diamine.ALSO:A cationic "non-thermosetting" (including previously fully thermoset) polymer containing a plurality of alkylene linkages and at least 10 amine nitrogen atoms per molecule is dissolved in paste rosin size as a fortifying agent (see Division C3). Sized paper may be obtained by impregnating cellulose fibres with the fortified size, sheeting the fibres and drying the sheets Alum may be added to the fibres after addition of the size. Specified classes of polymers are (a) polyalkylene-polymines, e.g. polyethyleneimine or the equimolar reaction product of ethylene dichloride and triethylene tetramine or 3, 3\sv-iminobispropylamine; (b) linear polyamidopolyamines, e.g. from adipic acid and tetraethylene-pentamine; (c) reaction products of (b) with an epihalohydrin; (d) linear polycondensates of methylenebisacrylamide and ethylene diamine.
