1,156,516. Water-soluble polyalkylenimine derivatives. BADISCHE ANILIN- & SODAFABRIK A.G. 1 Sept., 1966 [2 Sept., 1965], No. 39062/66. Heading C3R. [Also in Division D2] Water-soluble polyalkylenimine derivatives are prepared by reaction of polyalkylenimines with bifunctional alkylating agents wherein a polyalkylenimine which in the form of a 1% by weight aqueous solution has a viscosity of 1À03 to 1À6 centistokes at 25‹ C. is reacted with 0À5 to 25% by weight of epichlorohydrin (or the equivalent molar amount of another bifunctional alkylating agent having 2 to 4 carbon atoms in the molecule) at from 20‹ to 150‹ C. to such an extent that the reaction product, in the form of a 1% by weight aqueous solution, has a viscosity of 1À6 to 20 centistokes at 25‹ C. Examples of suitable bifunctional alkylating agents are epichlorohydrin, ethylene chloride, 1,3-dichloropropane, 1,4-dichlorobutane, dichlorohydrin and 1,2-3,4-diepoxybutane. Polyethylenimine is particularly suitable as the polyalkylenimine; other suitable examples being copolymers of 40 to 80% by weight of ethylenimine and 20 to 60% by weight of 1,2-propylenimine. The resulting polyalkylenimine derivatives are useful as assistants in the paper industry.
